Come join two enthusiastic groups on Aug. 30 in one event spun together by The Spinning Wheels Tour.
It is quite a coincidence that in 1817 Parkinson’s Disease was identified and the first bicycle was invented. Believe it or not, these two go very well together. Within two hundred years, biking has not only become a way to get around but is considered by many as one of the top three non-impact ways to exercise. People with PD quickly realise this, but also enjoy the freedom of moving themselves, defeating their balance and coordination struggles.
Although tremor is the most recognized symptom of PD, it is not a symptom all people with PD have. Bikers find this, and other symptoms of this neurological degenerative disease are relieved while biking. Some of these are: rigid muscles causing constant pain, frozen movement, stooped posture, depression, constipation and sleep difficulties.
The Event: The Spinning Wheels Tour team, Steve Iseman, Jim Redmond, Mike Loghrin and Darlene Richards-Loghrin, have been biking across Canada to focus public awareness on Parkinson’s Disease. They have been meeting with people whose lives are touched by PD, and encouraging them to get moving, get engaged in support communities, and to set up their own group athletics.
The members of The Spinning Wheels Tour are not athletes, just people with the resolve to do what it takes to live well with this disease, and to encourage others. Along the way, they hope to hear these words, “If they can do it, I can too.”
